Miner's Lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata)
Named Miner's Lettuce because early miners and settlers on the West Coast used this beautiful little plant as a salad vegetable.
I remember as a child we would look forward to the coming of the Miner's Lettuce - we would put it on OUR salads - and it was good!
I hadn't seen it around for a few years ... at least not much.
But THIS year is different!
It is all over the place!
Including my salad bowl.
This unassuming yet tasty little plant, caught in sun and shadow,

Oh I want to taste it now! Sounds good!
ReplyDeleteNever seen this plant before, very interesting, something I'd definately like to taste if I had the chance. Just popped a few lettuce seeds in an old half barrel. Can't wait for it to come up, there's nothing like growing your own.

miner's lettuce is my all time favorite green to eat! I have never seen it growing around here, but in California I would count on it as food while backpacking in the spring. Lovely photo.
